Day 7 - Great Sand Dunes National Park

Colorado City, Colorado to Gunnison, Colorado
What a fun day today! It was like going to the beach but no sticky salt to deal with and a lot more sand!

Playing in the water at the sand dunes that are in front of snow capped mountains.

Sand sledding! We stopped just outside the park at Great Sand Dunes Oasis and rented sand sleds for the day. If you do this, I highly recommend getting there when they open! We were there 10 minutes after opening time and it took over an hour for us to get the sleds and get into the park.

The sand dunes are a mixture of sand. One type of sand, black sand, is ferrous (meaning that it will stick to magnets). When we got to the hotel, we went to plug in the kids' watches and noticed that we accidentally brought home some of the black sand. It was stuck to the magnets on the back of their watches! You can see the rest of my pictures (and a couple sledding videos) in the Great Sand Dunes National Park album.

On the Road in Colorado
The picnic area at Great Sand Dunes was swarming with mosquitos, so we decided to hit the road and find a picnic area for lunch. By 3:00pm, we were starving and there was NOTHING for many many miles. So we picnicked in the car. I put the crackers, cheese, and meat in Ziploc bags for the kids and we all ate while we continued traveling!

One of the things that is so fascinating in Colorado is the scenery changes within a relatively short distance. This was not the most beautiful part we have driven, but it was certainly very interesting.

Mule deer on the side of the road. We also saw a few prairie dogs and a baby pronghorn with its mother. Unfortunately, the prairie dogs and pronghorns were too far away to get good pics.

We crossed the continental divide... again. The altitude sickness is better.

You can see the rest of my pics from around Colorado by looking at my Colorado -  Random album

So far, we have driven just over 2,600 miles!
