Day 6 - Florissant Fossil Beds NM & Garden of the Gods

Denver, Colorado to Colorado City, Colorado
The original plan was to visit Pike's Peak frist thing this morning and Garden of the Gods this afternoon (with a geocaching event between). Since the rangers at Alpine yesterday discouraged us from doing Pike's Peak (, thanks altitude sickness), we slept in this morning. Truthfully, it wouldn't have been a good day to do Pike's Peak anyway since the weather looked nasty this morning. The above picture is at Garden of the Gods Visitor Center.

Geocaching Maker Madness Event
Since we slept in this morning, the first thing we did was a geocaching event. It was at a beautiful park and the kids wanted to play, but bad weather rolled in before the end of the event. Fun fact: there were patches of snow all over the park because it snowed there last night.

Florissant Fossil Beds
Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument was a last minute addition to the trip. We didn't want to go to Garden of the Gods in the bad weather, so we went here to kill some time. There is a large collection of fossils, including species that have not been found anywhere else.

These are petrified redwood trees. Additional pics can be found in my Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument album.

Garden of the Gods
I love this picture so much.

The rock formations here were crazy. And the varying colors were interesting... red rock with a lot of greenery and snow covered peaks in the background. There are more pics in my Garden of the Gods album.

We have driven 2,400 miles this trip.
