Day 3 - Totos and Twine and Tarantulas, Oh My!

Topeka, Kansas to Colby, Kansas
Our first stop today was Wamego, Kansas and we finished the day by finding the oldest active geocache in the world! It was a busy day.

Oz Museum and Other Wizard of Oz Stuff
Follow the yellow brick road... We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz!

All over town there are Totos that have been painted. To see the full collection, check out the rest of our Kansas photos

Toto even came home with us.

If we had been in town at lunchtime, we definitely would have tried this place!

When we got there, this woman, who is somehow associated with the ball of twine, was adding twine and she let the kids add some. She was in a hurry, so I didn't get to talk to her to find out her association with the ball of twine, but the kids had fun adding to it.

This was a last minute addition to our trip. Isaiah is obsessed with Goliath Birdeater tarantulas. Before our trip, David and I searched Zoos in cities we were traveling through and tried so hard to locate one that he could go see but we never could find a zoo that had a Goliath Birdeater. Yesterday, I was looking at museums along our route and happened to find this one. I read through the current exhibits and noticed that they have a temporary exhibit on tarantulas. Isaiah doesn't get excited very often, but this totally made his day! In addition to the tarantula exhibit, they had a lot of fossils and rattlesnakes. It didn't look like much from the outside, but it was a very nice museum. There are more pics in the Kansas album.

Goliath Birdeater tarantula... Isaiah's favorite!

Poison Dart Frog.
Fish in a fish fossil. In Isaiah's words, "this is a really famous fossil and I didn't know it was here".

Mammoth skeleton.

Mingo -The Oldest Active Geocache
Several people (after seeing our route) asked why we were crossing through the middle of the country. This right here is why! We found Mingo! This is a really big deal in the geocaching world. I mentioned yesterday that there were other cachers at Missouri's Oldest cache from Indiana. When we pulled up to Mingo today, the same cacher was there, which is quite the coincidence!

Other Random Stuff From the Day
Quick picnic lunch on the way the The World's Largest Ball of Twine. We are trying to picnic at least one meal per day.

The pics didn't turn out well, but we passed 3 semis transporting wind turbine blades. Those things are massive!

We did a couple gadget caches while in Hays, Kansas. Gadget caches require you to do something to get the container open. For one, you had to play Simon. For the other, you had to find the key to the lock.

Thoughts on Kansas so far... It's not as flat as I expected. There are actually some decent hills in Kansas. Though I think that is only Eastern Kansas. Now that we are in western Kansas, it is FLAT. Also, you can see forever! There aren't many trees and the few trees that are around are in patches. Otherwise, there's not much here!

On another note, we also planned to visit Eyegore's Curiosities and Monster Museum right after The World's Largest Ball of Twine, but they are apparently closed on Wednesdays.

So far we have driven 1600 miles and have been to 6 states on this trip.
