Day 26 - Dinosaurs, Waterfalls, and The Great Salt Lake

Moab, Utah to Salt Lake City, Utah
Wow! What a day. The theme for the beginning of the day was dinosaurs! The above picture was taken at Mill Canyon Dinosaur Tracksite a little north of Moab. Can you see the dinosaur tracks?

Dinosaur Tracks and Bones
We visited two dinosaur tracksite locations this morning. Both were just a little north of Moab and both had some very obvious footprints. One was Mill Canyon (linked above) and the other was Copper Ridge.

There were also dinosaur bones still in rock at Mill Canyon Dinosaur Bones Trail. Some of these were a stretch, but you can see the darker rock right behind the kids (you might need to zoom in) that is supposedly dinosaur bones. Our other dinosaur tracks and bones pictures were added to my Moab Area album.

Waterfalls
This is a waterfall on the side of the road somewhere between Moab and Provo. We almost missed it. Actually, I was driving and did miss it, so we had to go back!

Bridal Veil Falls just north of Provo. It is over 600 feet high! Unfortunately, the trail was closed due to avalanche damage in January (you can see the damage to the left of the waterfall). Several people hiked the trail anyway (you can see them if you zoom in on the picture) but we chose not to.

Great Salt Lake
We decided to go "swimming" in Great Salt Lake. It was NOT at all what we expected. For one thing, you have to walk forever to actually get to the water.
Once you get to the water, it stays really shallow. It was not even up to my knees here. I think a storm was coming, because the wind was crazy. It was also getting dark, so we didn't hang out long.
The white streaks on Hannah's legs are salt after we got out. We wore our old bathing suits, which was good. The salt acts kind of like starch. I'm holding Isaiah's swim trunks and they are so stiff that they are sticking straight out!

I'm glad we went to Antelope Island State Park to do this, because they had showers for when we got out. It helped, but we were still quite itchy and salty. I wish we had more time to explore. They have bison and big horn sheep on the island, but we can't do everything.
I've tried several times to watch the sunset this trip and it never seems to work out. Today was the same. The colors were beautiful... What little we could see.

Other Sites from Today
We found a nice dinosaur themed playground (do you see the dinosaur) with a picnic area for lunch.

This double train tunnel was along the highway. We actually saw a few of these on our drive today.

I have heard the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City was beautiful, so I wanted to drive by and see it. Unfortunately, the entire temple was covered in scaffolding for renovations, so we couldn't really see it. The other pictures from today (other than the dinosaur tracks and bones) were added to my Utah - Random album.

So far, we have driven 6,300 miles on this trip. We have been to 13 National Parks, 4 additional historic sites, 1 presidential library and been through 13 states. We are headed to Idaho tomorrow :)
